Lenten Meditations by St. Thomas Aquinas Do you really make proper use of Lent? Pre-Vatican II Catholics had more help in using Lent properly. Not just the more rigorous disciplines, but sounder preaching and a wealth of solid spiritual books -- such as this magnificent treasury of Lenten wisdom… More
This book is very heavy reading - not light spiritual. I have many spiritual guides that I use daily. I am determined to finish Lent with this one, but I will not use it next year.

Daily reading during Lent
Comments:
I use it as one of my daily readings during Lent. I enjoy reading the words of one of our Saints and very learned man. I wish there had been a ribbon marker in the book, although using a book mark is not a real issue, the ribbon marker gives it more quality.

The product description pitches this book toward the traditionalist set, but I want to especially encourage those who don't see themselves in that group. If you're thinking about buying a daily meditations book for this Lent, this is probably the best choice you can make! The book itself is rather petite, so the meditations, although 2 pages long generally, are not all that long. They begin with Septuagesima Sunday, which is to say two and a half weeks before Ash Wednesday, and run through Holy Saturday. Now, those following the current missal won't see Septuagesima marked on the parish calendar, but with the internet it takes two seconds to find out when it falls, and if you prefer you can always just pick up on Ash Wednesday and skip those (although you might find you like having a run-up period). The real beauty of these meditations is that they have real depth; whereas many daily reflections collections basically give a thought a day, St Thomas (obviously) does a lot better than that. The meditations usually consist of a scripture verse followed by two or more points drawn from it, often working word by word or phrase by phrase. If you're not familiar with reading this kind of text, you might find this daunting, but leaving it there, I think, would be a mistake. You might not understand everything being said in the day's passage as a whole, but this is about spiritual growth, it isn't an exam! Use what jumps out at you, take what you can away from that day's reading, and -- here's the genius part -- NEXT YEAR I bet the book will speak to you in a new way. I usually get bored with this style of book, but unsurprisingly St Thomas comes through. In sum, this is a great book for everyone and I would not be shy to recommend it for anyone who asked. As I mentioned, the book is petite and lightweight, so it would go nicely into a purse or a side pocket of a laptop bag or briefcase. The binding is a bit crackly but seems solid enough and the paper is quite a nice…

When I read this I feel like I am in good hands, as if I am home. I have never felt this way with any of the contemporary Lenten devotionals that seem to abound. A truly traditional tome that I hope endures.
